Would You Know the Difference?

It's been a pretty warm summer (until this week!), and more and more people are coming through the door with suspicious looking moles. Early detection is key to successfully treating skin cancers. This photo demonstrates some of the hallmark signs to look out for, with malignant melanomas on the left and normal moles on the right. Check yourself regularly, avoid prolonged or intense UV exposure and see your GP if at all unsure about anything.

ABCDE of Melanoma:

  • Asymmetry - if you draw a line through the centre of a mole, the sides will not match.
  • Borders - the border will be irregular and poorly defined.
  • Colour - the mole will have multiple colours/shades.
  • Diameter - the mole will likely be larger than 6mm.
  • Evolving - any change to size, colour, itchiness, bleeding etc is a warning sign.
  • Malignant Melanoma
